Dollymount Show Great Determination
Playing against a very well organised Amber team, who had won the Div 2 league unbeaten and are now a Div 1 side and having played 4 pre season already and Dollymount having just the minimum players available, the Dollymount players show a great will to defend strongly and attack when possible.
Dollymount went 2 behind, with goals that won't happen again.
The defence with Steve Redmond right back & Fionn Daly left & Aido Clare And Germain Comerford ( 1 st game with the club, normally a full back) in the centre, started well, holding the line and keeping tight but also improved as the game went on.
Débutante Goal Keeper Steve Hogg had an excellent 1st game, making some fine saves and coming out to collect the ball when needed and help his new colleges.
Midfield of Mick O Hara right, Mark Philips left, Tom Lillis & Craig Henry centre.
Worked back to get behind the ball, when an attack broke down and tried to make it 2 banks of 4 defenders when possible.
Dollymount got a goal back when Niall Quinn coolly pocked the ball passed the oncoming keeper. This was after a fine build up that involved Aido, Germain, Craig and Tom who gave the ball into Steve's feet, held it up and gave a well weighted pass for Quinner who had made a run into the box, 2-1.
The second half was always going to be hard, with Amber having 7 subs to bring on, which they did, bringing fresh legs into their team. Thus working the Dollymount team harder.
Gavin Hughes got out of his sick bed to try help and came on with 1/2 hour left.
James Tracy who was managing on the line tried to help by bringing players on & off for short rests. James came on himself but only lasted a short time due to muscle cramp.
Dollymount kept Amber down to very few efforts with fine defending and with the few shots they had Steve Hogg dealt with very well, pulling off a couple of fine saves.
Dollymount had their own chances in the second half. The most memorable being Steve Redmond's after coming back on to play up front, took the ball down on the edge of the box with a man on his back, turned and caught the ball sweetly but their keeper pull off a great one hand save.
Amber did get a third, when the ball fell to an attacker after a miskick by one of amber's players.
Overall it was a good work out and should help for the up coming friendlies on Tuesday and Wednesday.
